Patrick Joaquin

Patrick “Pat” L. Joaquin, 68, of Honokaa, died April 10, 2021, at North Hawaii Community Hospital. Born July 5, 1952, in Haina, Honokaa, he was a former employee of Hamakua Sugar C0., journeyman carpenter and home restoration business owner, former security guard, former school bus driver for Akita Enterprises, retired staff sergeant with the Hawaii Army National Guard, member of the American Legion Post 3 Hilo, CB radio enthusiast and a hunter, archer, and fisherman.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. June 5 at King’s Chapel in Honokaa for a drive-through service. Condolences may be sent to PO Box 261, Honokaa HI 96727.

He is survived by wife, Bernadine (Silva) Joaquin of Honokaa; daughters, Jennifer (Giann) Finuliar of Honolulu, and Melanie Subiono of Honokaa; son, Robson Joaquin of Honolulu; brothers, Dennis Joaquin of Kailua-Kona and Lazaro (Daria) Joaquin of Hilo; sisters, Julie (Myron) Kidani and Fidela (Thomas) Long, all of Honokaa; hanai brother, Jerry Momi) Lorenzo of Honokaa; four grandchildren; one great-grandson; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Hisako Taniyama

Hisako Taniyama, 98, of Kailua-Kona, died April 29, 2021, at Kona Community Hospital. Born Dec. 2, 1922, in Honolulu, she was a retired counter agent for the former Aloha Airlines and member of the Kona Hongwanji Buddhist Temple, Waiaha Kumiai, Buddhist Women’s Association, Kona Senior Bowling League and Senior Activities.

Private services will be held at a later date.

She is survived by daughters, Marsha (James) Boyle of Kailua-Kona and Sylvia (Mike) Martines of Honolulu; sons, Alan (Sharon) Taniyama of Keopu and Terry (Cynthia) Taniyama of Kailua-Kona; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Janet Mukai

Janet Sachiko Mukai, 89, of Hilo, died April 27, 2021, at Life Care Center of Hilo. Born Aug. 6, 1931, in Ookala, she was a homemaker and was known as being the “Plant Lady,” selling her potted plants, within the former Food Fair Supermarket in Hilo.

Private services held. The family requests flowers and koden (monetary offerings) be omitted.

She is survived by sons, Derrick (Iris) Mukai and Dwayne (Lisa Kon-Mukai) Mukai, all of Hilo; daughter, Cathy (Paul) Moon of Hilo; brothers, Gerald (Betty) Matsubara of Pearl City, Oahu, and Glenn Matsubara of Hilo; sister, JoAnn Matsubara of Hilo; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.

Thomas Oishi

Thomas “Pake” Sadao Oishi, 78, of Hilo, died May 21, 2021, at Hawaii Care Choices Pohai Malama Care Center. Born Nov. 2, 1942, in Pepeekeo, he was a retired plant manager/driver trainer for Shell Oil Co., also a retired Sergeant First Class from the Hawaii Army National Guard, U.S. Army veteran and member of Kalanianaole School Class of 1957, Hilo High School Class of 1960, Word of God Church, Big Island National Guard Retirees Association, Hilo Jaycees (Rooster), The Sunday Golf Group, Brewer Golf Club and numerous other golf clubs.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. June 7 at Dodo Mortuary chapel in Hilo for a 10 a.m. service. Urn committal service follows at noon at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2 committal shelter. The family requests casual attire be worn and no monetary gifts or flowers and donations in his memory are suggested to Hilo High Foundation, 556 Waianuenue Ave., Hilo, HI 96720.

He is survived by son, Curt (Michelle) Oishi of Hilo; daughters, Colette (Kirk) Flores and Cori Anne (John) Balberde of Hilo; brothers, Ronald (Lei) Oishi of Pepeekeo, Frederick (Amy) Oishi and Daniel (Corinne) Oishi of Pearl City, Oahu, John Oishi of Mililani, Oahu, Guy (Linh) Oishi of Honolulu; sisters, Charlene Sugihara of Hilo, Nadine (Mark) Konia of Las Vegas; 11 grandchildren, numerous hanai children, hanai grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
