Nelson Caravalho

Nelson Joseph Caravalho, 76, of Kapaau, died May 2, 2021, atNorth Hawaii Community Hospital. Born in North Kohala, he was a retired truck driver for Yamada Transfer and the former Kohala Sugar Co., and member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hawi and Kohala Kupuna Softball League.

Friends may call at 10 a.m. June 10 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for an 11 a.m. service. Cremation to follow. Friends may also call at 10 a.m. June 12 for an urn committal service at Hawi Catholic Cemetery. Casual attire. Condolences may be sent to Laine Caravalho at P.O. Box 761, Kapaau, HI 96755.

He is survived by wife, Charlene Caravalho; sons, Irvin Caravalho of Kohala and Laine (Charla) Caravalho, all of Kohala; daughter, Maile Caravalho of Oahu; mother, Dora Caravalho of Kohala; brothers, John (Wilhelmina) Calvo of California, and Frederick Caravalho of Kohala; sisters, Brenda (Augustine) Santiago of Kohala, and Theresa (Melton) Gamayo of Hilo; two grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Edward Sumitani

Edward Tsugio Sumitani, 99, of Hilo died May 22, 2021, at his residence. Born in Hilo, he was a retired delivery driver for the former Hilo Gas Co. and a member of the Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin.

Friends may call at 3 p.m. June 10 at Dodo Mortuary chapel. Private services to follow. Casual attire.

He is survived by wife, Emiko Sumitani of Hilo; sons, Neal (Dorothy) Sumitani and Earl (Janice Ho Chee) Sumitani, all of Hilo; daughter, Audrey Haraguchi of Hilo; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Alona Taetuna-Kaluau

Alona Daniel Taetuna-Kaluau, 18, of Ocean View, died May 27, 2021, at Kona Community Hospital. Born June 14, 2002, in Kealakekua, he was a landscaper for Alii Lawn and Garden Landscaping Co. and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Services will be held at a later date.

He is survived by parents, J.R. and Dorene Taetuna-Kaluau; sisters, Tasianna Taetuna-Kaluau, Marieanna Taetuna-Kaluau, Keanna Taetuna-Kaluau, and Celestrianna Taetuna-Kaluau; paternal grandparents, Pule and Hazel Taetuna-Kaluau, all of Ocean View; maternal grandparents, Damon and Moli Clements of Captain Cook; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Thomas Jewett

Thomas “Tom” Guy Jewett, 82, of Kailua-Kona, died May 27, 2021, at Kona Community Hospital. Born Oct. 6, 1938, in La Crosse, Wisconsin, he was a retired vice president for a commercial insurance company.

Services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donationsmay be sent to Kona Community Hospital Foundation Cancer Center.

He is survived by wife, Kathleen Jewett of Kailua-Kona; daughter, Teri (Paul) Maassen of Louisiana; son, Guy (Lisa) Jewett of Indiana; brothers, Douglas Jewett of California and Chester (Debbie) Jewett of Wisconsin; grandchildren; step-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
