A diver was rescued Saturday after falling about 50 feet from a cliff near Laupahoehoe.

Responding to the 4:50 p.m. report, fire rescue personnel arrived about 20 minutes later at the shoreline below mile marker 18 off Mamalahoa Highway (Highway 19) to learn a diver had fallen 50 feet from a cliff into the ocean, according to the Hawaii Fire Department. A person with him called 911 after losing sight of the victim.

Two engines and the department’s East Hawaii rescue company, along with Chopper 1, a rescue boat, and the on-duty battalion chief responded to the report. Chopper 1 located the victim in the water and extricated patient, bringing them to awaiting medics on land.

The patient was then taken to Hilo Medical Center in critical condition. No additional information was available.
