OHA community grant awarded to health clinic

Five Mountains Hawaii Inc. dba Kipuka o ke Ola/KOKO announced Tuesday they have been awarded a one-year Office of Hawaiian Affairs Community Grant in the amount of $118,454.00 for its Kauka No‘ono‘o program.

“Mahalo nui to the Office of Hawaiian Affairs for helping KOKO bring a licensed psychiatrist to our community and to our kanaka lahui,” said KOKO CEO Dr. Kealoha-Beaudet.

Kipuka oke Ola is an independent rural health clinic in Waimea. KOKO’s mission is that “The Native Hawaiians living in North Hawaii will enjoy the highest quality of comprehensive healthcare from prenatal to end of life.”

The Kauka No‘ono‘o program aims to provide culturally-appropriate psychiatric services to 300 community members in need of psychiatric medication management services. Half of this group will be on Native Hawaiian ancestry.

Securing a licensed psychiatrist available to the community has been a vital goal given the dire shortage of psychiatric services on the Big Island and the growing need due to the pandemic. This project allows KOKO to accomplish this goal.

To reach KOKO or to learn more about the agency and its programs call (808) 885-5900 or visit www.kipukaokeola.com. KOKO can also be found on Facebook (kipuka o ke ola) and on Instagram (kipuka_o_ke_ola).
