Another 13 drivers nabbed for suspected DUI

Big Island police arrested 13 motorists for suspected drunken driving Aug. 9 and Sunday. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.

Kona officers arrested four drivers while South Hilo and North Kohala officers arrested three in each district, according to data released Tuesday by the Hawaii Police Department. Puna officers arrested two motorists and South Kohala officers one.

So far this year, there have been 700 DUI arrests compared with 565 during the same period last year, according to police.

There have been 496 major accidents so far this year compared with 482 during the same period last year.

As of Monday, 13 fatalities have been recorded on the Big Island’s public roadways this year, police said. By this time in 2020, 12 people had died. A 14th fatality was recorded Tuesday morning following a two-vehicle collision on Highway 19 in Honokaa. That death will be included in week’s total.
