County announces reopening of senior programs and services

The Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation announces the reopening of numerous islandwide senior programs and services.

The Nutrition Program’s Congregate Meal Centers will reopen starting Jan. 10, 2022. Contact the Hawaii County Nutrition Program at (808) 961-8726 for more information.

The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) will also resume on Jan. 10, 2022, to provide full volunteer services to individuals and government/non-profit agencies. Persons 55 years and older wishing to participate in the program or government and nonprofit agencies desiring to utilize RSVP to support day-to-day operations can contact RSVP in Hilo at (808) 961-8730 or in Kona at (808) 323-4333. Inquiries can also be made via email at rsvp@hawaiicounty.gov.

Elderly Recreation Services (ERS) classes also reopen on Jan. 10, 2022. Registration for all classes will remain open until the start of classes that month, and participants can register for multiple classes.

Registration for classes in Puna will begin at 10 a.m. on Dec. 13, 2021, at the Keaau Community Center (16-186 Pili Mua St.). Drive-thru registration for classes at the Kamana Senior Center in Hilo will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 15 at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium parking lot areas (323 Manono St.). Registration after Dec. 15 will be at the Kamana Senior Center.

Seniors enrolled in classes canceled in August 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic will be contacted individually by ERS staff for rescheduling of classes.
