Big Island police arrested 37 motorists for suspected drunken driving between Feb. 14 and Sunday. Six of the drivers was involved in a traffic crash; four were younger than age 21.
Kona officers arrested 17 drivers while South Hilo officers arrested nine and Puna officers three, according to data released by the Hawaii Police Department. Meanwhile, officers in South Kohala arrested three motorists while officers in the North Kohala and Hamakua districts arrested one driver in each district.
So far this year, there have been 166 DUI arrests compared with 178 during the same period last year, according to police.
There have been 100 major accidents so far this year compared with 100 during the same period last year.
As of Friday, eight fatalities had been recorded on the Big Island’s public roadways this year, police said. By that time in 2021, five people had died.
