Konawaena’s bid to earn a spot in the HHSAA semifinal came up just short against third-seeded Nanakuli at Francis Wong Stadium in Hilo on Thursday.

Down three runs entering the seventh inning, the Wildcats were able to score Keoki Alani and Kamaehu Makanui, but ultimately could not bring the tying run across.

Makanui led Konawaena with two hits, one run and one RBI. In addition to his one hit, Riki Furuto was the only other Wildcat to drive in a run; Taven Hiraishi and Trez Uemoto each tallied one hit, as well.

Hiraishi got the start on the mound for Konawaena, allowing four runs while striking out 10 in six innings of work. Nanakuli’s Donald Kapaku earned the win, pitching a complete game.

Most of Nanakuli’s damage on offense came during a three-run third inning.

Konawaena will play again on Friday against either Waimea or Waipahu. First pitch is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. at Francis Wong Stadium.
