Benjamin Diama

Benjamin Diama, 88, formerly of Kailua-Kona, died April 29, 2022, at a private care home. Born in Hilo, he was retired from Kona Community Hospital, a teacher, artist, poet and author.

Friends may call at 9:30 a.m. May 18 for a 10 a.m. service at Ballard Family Mortuary in Hilo. Private burial at Alae Cemetery.

He is survived by sisters, Catherine Campainha and Carol Brown, both of Hilo.

Priscilla Roque

Priscilla “Perci” Ann Roque, 70, of Paauilo died April 5, 2022, at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Laupahoehoe, she was an office clerk at the Mealani Research Station in Waimea, member of the Mauna Kea Jaycees and an avid badminton, tennis, volleyball player, bowler and hula dancer.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. May 21 at the Papaikou Hongwanji Mission Hall; a celebration of life will begin at 10:30. Luncheon to follow.

She is survived by son, Leighton (Jessica) Roque of Ocean View; brothers, John (Avis) Roque of Honokaa, David (Carol) Roque of Hilo, and Walter (Sharon) Roque of Waimea; four grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Darnell Tin Loy

Darnell Iwalani Tin Loy, 78, of Hilo, died April 10, 2022, at Hawaii Care Choices Pohai Malama Care Center. Born in Honolulu, she was a homemaker and member of the Apostolic Faith Church of Hilo.

Friends may call at 10:30 a.m. May 19 at Valley of the Temples Lower Chapel, Kaneohe, Oahu. Funeral service at 11 a.m. Burial will follow. Casual attire.

She is survived by husband, Walter Tin Loy of Hilo; sons, Blaine Tin Loy and Ryan (Jody) Tin Loy of Oahu; daughters, Kimberly (Randy) Gomes of Oahu and Shanna (Peter) Nahoopii of Hilo; sisters, Gwen Mocksing of Hilo, Renee (Dwayne) Tuttle of Texas, Gail Lyle and Robin Whitworth of Oahu; five grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Florence Figueira

Florence Mattos Figueira, 93, of Hilo, died April 21, 2022. She was born in Hilo and was a retired sales manager for J.C. Penney’s, was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and the Big Island Portuguese Culture Club.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. May 23 at Dodo Mortuary Chapel; funeral service at 11 a.m. Committal service will follow at the Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2 Pavilion.

She is survived by daughter, Laura Figueira of Oahu; sons, Dennis Gabriel Figueira of Seattle, Gabriel Paul Figueira of Hilo, and David Wayne Figueira of Oahu; brothers, Albert Mattos and Alexander Mattos of Hilo; sister, Agnes Harris of Hayward, California; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

William Nihi

William Alan Kaluna Nihi, 71, of Pahoa, died May 1, 2022. He was born Feb. 22, 1951 in Honolulu.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. for a drive thru celebration of life in Nanawale at the Nihi residence, 14-3580 Church Road, Pahoa.

He is survived by wife, Marie Nihi; daughters Tanya, Lisa (Brad), Christy (Paulie), Stacie, Nadine (Taba), and Precious (Shelton); brothers, Gilbert and Peter; sisters, Donna and Nani; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Rev. Midori Kondo

Rev. Midori Ogawa Kondo, 87, of Keaau, died March 27, 2022 at her residence. Born May 6, 1934, in Pasadena, California, she was a retired teacher in the Los Angeles and Hawaii School Districts, later worked as a Nishi Hongwanji Buddhist minister at Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin and Lihue Hongwanji and was active in the Kyodan and Buddhist Women’s Association (Fujinkai), and was a Dharma School Teacher. V

Friends may call at 9:30 a.m. May 28 at Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin; memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. Casual attire is requested. No flowers.

She is survived by sons, Glenn Kondo of Keaau and Alan (Yuka) Kondo of Cupertino, California; daughter, Maya Kondo of Keaau; sisters-in-law, Keiko Ogawa of Elkton, Oregon and Barbara Ogawa of Monterey Park, California; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.
