Verle Hughes Jr.

Verle “Butch” Eugene Hughes Jr. 75, of Kailua-Kona, died July 24, 2022, at Kona Community Hospital. Born Oct. 2, 1946, in Alexandria, Indiana, he was owner of Kona Photo Arts, a member of the Delta Chi Fraternity, the Elks Club, Kona Baptist Church, and Kona Festival Chorale, and a teacher at Konawaena High School.

Services will be held at a later date.

He is survived by his wife, Pam Hughes of Kailua-Kona; daughter, Michelle (James Kennedy) Hughes; son, Michael Hughes, all of Kona; three grandchildren; hanai daughters, Kalae Yonemura, Lacey (Thomas) Scales and Raylene (Brian) Sopkin, all of Kona; hanai son, David (Kiana) Yonemura of Georgia; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Faaluaina Ulep

Faaluaina T. Ulep, 65, of Keaau, died July 19, 2022 at The Queen’s Medical Center. Born in Western Samoa, she was a warehouse supervisor for Calavo Growers in Keaau.

Friends may call Aug. 13 at Dodo Mortuary chapel; visitation from 4 to 6 p.m.; service at 6. Friends may call Aug. 14 at Dodo Mortuary chapel; visitation from 9 to 10 a.m.; Service at 10. Burial to follow at Alae Cemetery in Hilo.

She is survived by children, Rogelio (Duchess Kaina) Ulep Jr. of Hilo, Patricia (Jeremy) Royce of Fresno, California, Eric (Michelle Jimenez) Ulep of Keaau and Lance (Meilani Tanaka) Ulep of Kurtistown; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Adeline Quirit

Adeline Arce Quirit, 103, of Pepeekeo, passed away on Saturday, July 30, 2022 at Hilo Medical Center, she was born on November 2, 1918, in Caoayan, Philippines; she was a member and a Eucharistic Minister for the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Papaikou and she also was a member of the Filipino Catholic Club. Private Rosary and Viewing from 9 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. for family… Friends may call Monday, August 15, 2022 at the Immaculate Heart Mary Catholic Church in Papaikou; Visitation from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. with Eulogy; Celebration of Mass at 10:30 a.m.

Burial to follow Alae Cemetery Sec. H, Row A, Plot 18 at 12 noon. She is survived by sons, Ignacio (Roberta) Quirit, Jr. of Hilo, Joven (Miriam) Quirit and Andrew Quirit of Pepeekeo; daughters, Mavis (Edmando) Mangibin and Delia (Thomas) Brown of Hilo, Gayleen Williams of Honolulu; 20 grandchildren 27 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; caregiver, Edeus “Edie” Agbilog of Pepeekeo; numerous nieces and nephews.

Manuel Meria

Manuel “Manno” Joseph P. Meria, 53, of Hilo died June 28, 2022, at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Hilo, he was an automotive mechanic.

A celebration of his life will take place from 11 to 2 p.m. Aug. 14 at the Gilbert Carvalho Park. Casual attire.

He is survived by fiancé, Yolanda Eblacas of Hilo; children, Shane Pacheco and Shanaya Sibonga, both of Hilo; mother, Rose Marie (Junior Ah Hee) Rice of Hilo; and numerous cousins, aunts and uncles.
