VFW schedule announced
VFW Post 12122 behind Kona Locksmith off Kaiwi Street has several events planned.
An officers meeting is scheduled at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Gaylene’s onion burgers will be served with burgers, salad and dessert from 5-7 p.m. Cost is $5 and the public is invited.
The annual POW/ MIA bike run is Saturday. It will culminate at Honokohau Harbor and is supported by the VFW Auxiliary.

Senior ID cards issued
The Coordinated Services of the Elderly Program of the Elderly Activities Division issues Senior ID cards for those age 60 or older Monday through Friday at the Aging &Disability Resource Center in Hilo.
Cards will also be issued from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m Sept. 6 at the Kailua-Kona Wal-Mart, 1-3 p.m. Sept. 7 at Hale Hauoli Senior Center in Honokaa, 11 a.m. to noon Sept. 12 at Naalehu Community Center, 9-11 a.m. Sept. 12 at Kohala Coordinated Services of the Elderly, 9-11 a.m. Sept. 13 at L. Yoshimatsu Senior Center in Waimea, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 20 at Yano Hall, and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m Sept. 28 at West Hawaii Civic Center, Building B.

The Lions Club of Kona presents scholarships
The Lions Club of Kona showed presented several scholarships to graduating students from Konawaena High School for continued education.
The club presented Aaliyah Butler $1,000 for the Jonney Pha Hodges Trust Scholarship. Butler will attend Azusa Pacific University.
Derek Ogi received a $1,000 general scholarship, and will attend University of Southern California.
Nala Mrozinski-Foti was awarded a $1,000 general scholarship. She will attend University of Hawaii at Manoa.
Larrianne Daine Lagpacan was presented with a $1,000 general scholarship to attend U-H Hilo.
Dalon Freitas received a $500 scholarship and will attend Hawaii Community College-Hilo.
Juan Manuel Ramirez-Godinez received a $500 general scholarship.
In addition to offering scholarships, the club conducts a variety of projects and events, including hearing and vision screening of West Hawaii elementary school students, community food drives, neighborhood park upkeep, partnering with other nonprofit organizations and the sponsorship of the Konawaena High School Leo Club.
The Lions Club of Kona has 53 members and meets at 6:30 p.m. on the third Monday of each month on the second floor of Teshima’s Restaurant. Lions Clubs are groups of men and women who identify needs within the community and work together to fulfill those needs.
