Joan Owens

Joan “Joanne” “Nana” Owens, 89, of Pahoa, died Aug. 30, 2021, at her residence. Born in Garden City, Kansas, she was a homemaker and member of the Pahoa Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Private services held.

She is survived by daughter, Carol Dennis of Pahoa; two grandsons; two great-grandsons; and nieces and nephews.

Isamu Fukui

Isamu Fukui, 97, of Laupahoehoe, died Aug. 20, 2021, at his residence. Born Nov. 20, 1923, in Waipunalei, he was retired from the former Hamakua Sugar Co., a volunteer firefighter for the Laupahoehoe Fire Department and member of Papaaloa Hongwanji Mission Kyodan, Laupahoehoe Senior Center and ILWU Pensioners.

Private services were held. Family requests no monetary gifts or flowers.

He is survived by wife, May Fukui of Laupahoehoe; daughters, Lynn (Neal) Arisumi and Amy Fukui of Honolulu; brothers, Thomas (Leoni) Fukui of Hilo, Donald (Carol) Fukui of Honolulu, Richard (Elaine) Fukui of Hilo; sisters, Harumi Higashigawa of Gardena, Calif., Nancy (Robert) Delos Santos of Mililani, Oahu; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Nelson Tsuji

Nelson Masashi Tsuji, 79, of Hilo, died Sept. 16, 2020, at Hawaii Care Choices Pohai Malama Hospice Facility. Born in Pepeekeo, he was a retired fire chief for the Hawaii County Fire Department, former security officer with TSA at the Hilo International Airport and a U.S. Army veteran.

Friends may call from 9 to 10 a.m. Sept. 16 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for visitation; private services to follow. Casual attire. Family requests no flowers and no koden (monetary gifts).

He is survived by wife, Betty Tsuji of Hilo; son, Niel Tsuji of Minnesota; brothers, Douglas (Chieko) Tsuji and Earl (Betty) Tsuji, all of Hilo, and William Tsuji of Honolulu; sisters, Maizie Ash of Hilo and, Pearl Tsuji of Honolulu; two granddaughters; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Gary Bolter

Gary Lee Bolter, 73, of Hilo, died Aug. 18, 2021. Born in Denver, CO, he was a Hawaiian priest and a member at The American Legion, VFW, and Disabled American Veterans.

Private service held.

He is survived by mother, June Amend; sisters Linda (Cliff) Gauthier and Gail Bolter; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Andres Agan

Andres “Nato” Agan Jr., 83, of Arizona, died Aug. 30, 2021, at his home. Born in Ola’a, he was retired from the U.S. Air Force, an information specialist with the State Department, and member of Sons of Norway, Filipino Veterans and Air Force Vets, Vietnam Vets, and Magicians Club in Las Vegas.

Mass to be held at 9 a.m. Sept. 21 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hawi, veterans burial service to follow at West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery at noon. Social distancing and mask wearing is required.

He is survived by his daughter, Andrea Hieger; brother, Nathan Agan; sisters, Marlene Manzano, Charlotte Agan-Paiva, Brenda Okano, Laura Medeiros, Isabel Smith, Liberty Rivera, and Paula Hall; two grandchildren; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
