The Department of Land and Natural Resources is deciding how to remove a approximately 10 feet tall, 20 feet in diameter yellow metal container that washed ashore in the Ka’u district.
A report was made to DLNR Oct. 4, from a caller who said he had seen the container at Waikapuna in late September. Hikers had also discovered the object on Oct. 3.
DLNR has asked various local maritime agencies for assistance identifying the object. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is also checking its database of reported tsunami debris.
The public may report findings of possible Japan tsunami marine debris at dlnr@hawaii.gov or disasterdebris@noaa.gov. Both agencies are asking for photos, date, detailed description of items, location, finder’s contact information and if there are any living organisms other than goose neck barnacles on the item. Reports may be made by phone to DLNR at 587-0400.
