Wow. West Hawaii Today endorses Dru Kanuha because he has friends in Oahu. Is that the best you can do?

Gabbard, Green fail
on simple issues
My family moved to the South Kohala area about two years ago. We’ve become active in various public activities to both make a contribution to our new home as well as learn about our community.
We’ve also had occasion to “reach out” to two of our elected leaders trying to resolve issues that are faced by many, not just us.
Our area is serviced by the post office in Kamuela, despite being much closer to the Waikoloa Village location. This is due to postal boundaries drawn in 1962 and never revised. Contractors will not deliver packages to the door and instead return them to Kamuela, a 40-minute drive due to the USPS inflexibility. Repeated attempts to contact Tulsi Gabbard have not even gotten a response from her office much less a discussion of the issue.
One family member travels with a certified service dog. The airlines are terrific. The Hawaiian state government is a huge problem for our return to Kona. Repeated attempts to get some attention to this problem from Sen. Josh Green have also been ineffectual.
These two politicians are asking for my vote this year. They’ve not shown to be able to address even relatively straightforward issues. Neither is likely to get get my vote.

Get out the vote
My message is to younger people who’s future is at stake and others who are beyond their prime of life like me who understand the need for our state Legislature to recognize the need for long-term strategic planning. There are challenges that government now faces and ones that are inevitable in the future. We can not continue to run state government on a two-year reactionary funding basis.
Whether it be environmental protection, affects of climate change, building of schools and highways, job creation, and affordable housing, we need to think long term and elect smart, visionary people who are not jaded and stuck in the muck of more of the same political thinking. Change is needed.
Let’s plan ahead, strategically identify needs, and figure out better ways to pay for long haul challenges. Time for some new blood to take the reigns. Take advantage of the opportunity. Vote!
