A former Oahu Circuit Court probation officer is facing theft and forgery charges, Hawaii Attorney General Doug Chin announced Monday.
Freeman Sasao, 56, was charged Friday with one count of felony theft and eleven felony forgery counts, Chin said.
The state alleges that between July 1, 2011, and July 9, 2013, Sasao collected 11 payments from various probationers that had been assigned to him and kept the payments for his own use. He then allegedly forged receipts to credit the payments to the various probationers.
Sasao is set to appear for an arraignment and plea hearing May 7 before Judge Richard K. Perkins.
The felony charges are each punishable by up to five years in prison and a $20,000 fine.
