Local credit union receives national award
Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union has received an honorable mention for Credit Union National Association’s Louise Herring Philosophy in Action Award. The local credit union will be honored in March during CUNA’s 2008 Governmental Affairs Conference in Washington, D.C. It is the only credit union in Hawaii that was honored with a CUNA national award this year.
The Louise Herring Philosophy in Action Award recognizes credit unions that demonstrate the internal application of credit union philosophy to help better financial matters and increase financial education for its members. HCFCU was honored for its re-branding campaign themed “Ownership Counts.” During the campaign, a variety of activities and messaging were used to create an environment of “ownership” for its members, with the objective to communicate that each member is an integral part of the organization — not just a member but an owner.
Kona Irrigation named product distributor
Kona Irrigation Supply Ltd. has been named a new Hawaii distributor for Kichler landscape lighting product, the firm has announced.
Founded in 1938 and based in Cleveland, Kichler is among the world’s leading decorative lighting fixture companies and offers one of the widest ranges of landscape lighting solutions today for contractors.
For contractors, Kichler fixtures help grow business by enhancing new and existing landscape installations with outdoor lighting that is easy and safe to put in place.
Kichler products include a variety of fixtures for outdoor lighting applications, such as pathways and walkways, lanais and decks, gardens, water features and general landscape accenting.
The company’s products are UL rated and approved and are known for their durability and long life, manufactured with architectural grade materials including copper, premium copper content brass and stainless steel. They are all backed by premium five-year, 10-year and limited lifetime warranties.
Kichler products can be previewed or ordered at both Kona Irrigation warehouse stores in Kona on Oluwelu Street in the Kaloko Light Industrial Area and in Honolulu on Waiwai Loop off of Lagoon Drive.
Windermere opens new Kona office
Windermere Island Properties has opened its new Kona office building on lower Walua Road mauka of the Alii Cove development near the Pottery Terrace intersection, the firm has announced.
The 4,000-square-foot, two-story facility was custom-built for Windermere and is wired for state-of-the-art technology. The company recently held a traditional Hawaiian blessing for the building and last month hosted a client appreciation night at which local clients were able to meet Windermere corporate founder John Jacobi.
Windermere Island Properties, which first opened for business in Kona in spring 2006, is the first affiliate office of Windermere Real Estate, the largest regional real estate brand in the Western United States, with 350 offices and 8,000 associates. Since opening, a second Windermere Hawaii office has been opened at the Shops at Wailea on Maui in January 2007.
Both the Kona and Maui operations are co-owned by the Knowles family. Casey Knowles has joined with sibling business partners, Brad and Kim Knowles, who have many years of familiarity with Kona and the Big Island along with extensive real estate experience in Seattle. The 16 agents in Windermere’s Kona operation are generally long-established in the West Hawaii community.
Mauka shopping center celebrates Easter
Easter fun for the entire family, open to all ages, is free at Kealakekua Ranch Center’s Easter Festival from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the center. Keiki can enjoy free hot dogs, balloons, face painting and photos with the Easter bunny.
There will be inflatable bouncers and an egg hunt. Children who find the golden egg in each age division, 1 to 3 years of age, 4 to 7, 8 to 11 and 12 years plus, win a prize. The egg hunt starts at 10 a.m. Keiki can also enter an Easter coloring contest. Winners in each age group receive Kealakekua Ranch Center prizes.

Hokulia raises more than $3M for Kona charities
Hokulia announced that it has raised more than $3 million for local charities and nonprofits over the past six years through “Community Play” events at its private, Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course. Hokulia’s Community Play program provides an opportunity each month for a local charity to hold a fundraising golf tournament. All proceeds from these tournaments go directly to the beneficiary organizations.
The Food Basket, Hawaii Island’s food bank, is the most recent nonprofit to benefit from the Community Play program. It was the February Community Play beneficiary charity this year that raised more than $40,000 in support of its operations.
