Kailua seawall repair begins Monday
Kailua seawall restoration work will begin Monday, Department of Public Works officials said Friday.
The county awarded the $173,000 project to Isemoto Contracting. The project is scheduled for completion June 6, with work scheduled from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. The wall was damaged in the 2011 tsunami.
Officials also said the 11,000-square-foot Makalei Fire Station is 94 percent finished, with contractors now constructing the 50-foot driveway, connecting it to Mamalahoa Highway, installing traffic signal beacons and completing utility work. The construction cost is $6.2 million, of which $ 4.1 million was funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The project is scheduled for completion in August.

County plans pool closures
Drain cover replacement will close two West Hawaii county pools for at least 10 days each. Kona Pool at Konawaena High School will be closed beginning May 4, while the Kona Community Aquatic Center Pool will be closed beginning May 21, Parks and Recreation officials said Friday.
The Department of Parks and Recreation is replacing all of the drain covers at each facility with newer, safer versions that meet mandated federal standards to address potential entrapment issues.
New drain covers have already been installed at the Kohala pool.
