DUESSELDORF, Germany — Serbia overcame the Czech Republic in the final of the World Team Cup on Saturday to clinch the title for the second time.
Janko Tipsarevic and Viktor Troicki won their singles matches to give Serbia an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series at the Rochus Club.
Baker loses final
to Almagro in Nice
NICE, France — Nicolas Almagro beat American qualifier Brian Baker 6-3, 6-2 to win the Open de Nice on Saturday and clinch his 12th career title.
The defending champion broke the 216th-ranked Baker’s serve in the fourth and eighth games of the second set. He also had 11 aces.
Schiavone beats Cornet to win Strasbourg final
STRASBOURG, France — Francesca Schiavone beat Alize Cornet of France 6-4, 6-4 in the Strasbourg International final on Saturday to win her first title of the year and fifth of her career.
The 2010 French Open champion proved too strong for Cornet, improving her overall record against her to 8-1.
Keselowski starts big weekend with win
CONCORD, N.C. — Brad Keselowski won the NASCAR Nationwide Series event at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Saturday, leading the final 67 laps to give Penske Racing a winning start on auto racing’s biggest weekend.
Keselowski raced to his first Nationwide victory of the year. He’ll try to double up in Sprint Cup’s longest race of the season, the Coca-Cola 600 today.
Braves place Chipper on DL with bruised leg
ATLANTA — The Atlanta Braves placed Chipper Jones on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a bruised left and recalled catcher J.C. Boscan from Triple-A Gwinnett.
Jones, who plans to retire after the season, is hitting .307 with five homers and 24 RBIs. The DL move was retroactive to Thursday.
O’s, Jones agree to deal through 2018
BALTIMORE — The Baltimore Orioles and center fielder Adam Jones have agreed to an $85.5 million, six-year contract through 2018, a person familiar with the negotiations said, the largest deal in Orioles’ history.
Jones’ new deal includes a $2 million signing bonus, $8.5 million in 2013, $13 million each in 2014 and 2015, $16 million apiece in 2016 and 2017 and $17 million in 2018.
