Greenwell garden visitor center open house is Friday
Amy B.H. Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden, which showcases the native plants and trees used in Hawaiian culture prior to Western contact, will hold a community open house at its new visitor center from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday.
The event will feature light refreshments, musical entertainment and tours of the garden.
The new entry driveway is across from the Manago Hotel and next to Yano Hall on Highway 11.
The garden in Captain Cook is open for self-guided tours from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and guided tours at 1 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. Admission is $7 for adults; discounts are available to seniors, kamaaina, military and children.

Storyteller performing
at island libraries
Antonio Rocha, an internationally-acclaimed and award-winning storyteller, mime and actor, is scheduled to perform his “Jungle Tales” as part of the 2012 Hawaii State Public Library System’s Children’s Summer Reading Program.
Rocha has presented his stories and mime in 14 countries on six continents, including performances at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Smithsonian Institution and National Storytelling Festival. His repertoire of tales with an ecological theme and a myriad of sound effects entertains and educates.
Rocha shares this wild trip into the African and Brazilian jungles at 2 p.m. June 28 at Honokaa Public Library; 9:30 a.m. July 2 at Naalehu Public Library; and noon July 2 at Pahala Public and School Library.
The 45-minute performance is free and recommended for ages 5 and older. All children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver.
Anyone who requires a sign language interpreter or other special accommodation to participate should contact the hosting library at least three weeks in advance.
