A man was injured early Wednesday after he apparently lost control of his vehicle and hit a utility pole prompting a highway closure in the Waimea area.
South Kohala Police Capt. Aimee Wana said an elderly man was traveling westbound on Highway 19 around 4:30 a.m. when he apparently hit the pole that subsequently fell on the roadway between mile markers 54 and 55. The man was transported to North Hawaii Community Hospital for observation, she added.
The highway was closed while Hawaii Electric Light Co. crews replaced the pole. Traffic was detoured via Kahilu Street until the road reopened shortly after 11 a.m., Wana said.
