The John Natsoulas Gallery presents an invitational exhibition highlighting the legendary rabbit in art from July 11 to Aug. 4. The most diversely represented animals in world culture and folklore, rabbits are variously depicted as tricksters, fertility symbols, luck-bringers, cowards or cuddly pets.
Now 11 noted ceramic artists, including Amber Aguirre of Kailua-Kona, share their unique sculptural interpretations as they address the question “What Is A Rabbit?”
Other exhibiting artists across the country making work for this show include Rebekah Bogard, Reno, Nev.; Kelly Connole, Northfield, Minn.; Alanna de Rocchi, Helena, Mont.; Susannah Israel, Oakland, Calif.; Joe Kowalczyck, Berkeley, Calif.; Tom Michelson, San Francisco; Merry Arttoones, Tucson, Ariz.; Kensuke Yamada, Philadelphia; Fred Yokel, Campbell, Calif., and Wanxin Zhang, San Francisco.
The gallery has a long history of working with innovative and collaborative approaches to ceramic art.
“I was inspired both by the desire to see more splendid rabbits from the likes of Aguirre, Bogard, Connole and de Rocchi, as well as a chance to see how Kowalczyck, Michelson, Yamada, Yokel and Zhang would work with the concept. It’s going to be an exciting show,” said guest curator, artist and critic Susannah Israel.
An opening reception is scheduled for 7 to 9 p.m. July 13.
