Firefighters Friday continued mop-up efforts to extinguish a brush fire that consumed about 400 acres off Hina Lani Street in Kailua-Kona.
The fire scorched an area stretching north from Hina Lani to Hulikoa Road after igniting about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in vacant land north of Hina Lani’s intersection with Kamanu Street, said Hawaii Fire Department West Hawaii Battalion Chief Reuben Chun. A Hawaii County helicopter is continuing water drops to douse flames in areas deemed inaccessible to firefighters.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Firefighters were scheduled to monitor the fire throughout the night and quash any flare-ups, Chun said.
