Artists’ collaborative reception, auction Sunday in Holualoa
The second annual Hawaii Artist Collaborative reception and auction is slated from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Holualoa Inn’s Malulani Pavilion.
The combined works of 30 artists from Hawaii, Australia, England and the U.S. mainland will be featured.
The collaborative event brings together artists representing different media, including blacksmithing, sculpting and found-object assemblage. One of the goals of the annual gathering, held Tuesday through today, is to reinvigorate artists and craftsmen to take back new possibilities and connections to the communities they serve the rest of the year, according to Tai Lake, who co-organized the event with Cliff Johns.
Pieces will be sold with no reserve, with proceeds funding art scholarships and future collaborative events.

Marathon of monotypes, reception at Donkey Mill
The Donkey Mill Art Center presents Monothon 2012: A Celebration of Hand-Pulled Prints from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday.
More than 50 local artists have created original, hand-pulled monotype prints, which are currently on exhibit, to be sold during the silent and live auction. The champagne reception Thursday will offer an evening of art, live music by a violin and cello duo and food. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. For reservations, call 322-3362 or visit donkeymillartcenter.org
Monotype prints are characterized by the fact that no two prints are exactly alike, which is what makes this method different than other printmaking techniques. The simplicity of the approach allows the resulting prints to carry a translucency that creates a quality quite different from watercolors, woodcut prints or etchings. The immediacy of the method allows individuals from various media to dive in and create beautiful prints as a new means of expression and to rediscover their sense of spontaneity.
This event was created by artist Hiroki Morinoue with the intention of educating the community about monotype prints while raising funds for the Donkey Mill’s educational and outreach programs. He and Miho Morinoue opened the print studio to the public and assisted artists from a variety of media to create prints. In exchange, the artists donated some of their best prints to be exhibited and sold in support of the Donkey Mill’s future programs.
Some of the prints, which will be on exhibit in the children’s studio, were made by young artists from Innovations Public Charter School, as well as the center’s after-school program.
The center is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Call 322-3362 for more information.
