Ka‘u ended its most memorable season in program history with a 22-25, 25-21, 19-17 loss to Farrington in the third-place match of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division II girls volleyball state tournament Friday at Honolulu’s Blaisdell Arena.
The Trojans, who won their first Big Island Interscholastic Federation title a week ago, ended their season 17-4.
Ka‘u senior middle blocker Marley Strand-Nicolaisen pounded a team-high 12 kills, junior Kamalani Fujikawa and senior Kaila Olson (two blocks) followed with seven kills apiece, and sophomore setter Kerrilyn Domondon collected 28 assists.
Senior Trinity Alualu led Oahu Interscholastic Association champion Farrington (14-3) with nine kills, while sophomore setter Shaunalei Kahakai had 13 assists.
In the Division II fifth-place match, BIIF No. 3 seed Hawaii Prep beat Kauai Interscholastic Federation champion Waimea 27-26, 25-18 behind sophomore Gabbie Ewing’s 12 kills.
Junior Tiana Reynolds contributed eight kills, while junior Nua Potts had 16 assists for Ka Makani, which finished its season 16-6.
Junior middle blocker Mariyah Oliver paced Na Menehune (12-2) with eight kills.
In the Division II seventh-place match, BIIF runner-up Konawaena outlasted 25-20, 24-26, 17-15.
Freshman outside hitter Chanelle Molina blasted 11 kills, senior Courtney Kaupu followed with nine kills, and sophomore Kaela Avanilla had eight kills and three blocks. Also, senior setter Makani Wall collected 23 assists, three blocks and two aces for the Wildcats (15-6).
Senior setter Allison Paloga led OIA No. 3 seed Kaimuki (6-12) with 11 kills and 15 assists, while junior Kawena Paez and junior Amako Kinere had 10 and nine kills, respectively.
In the Division I state tournament seventh-place match, Castle beat BIIF runner-up Hilo 25-19, 26-24.
Senior outside hitter Kuulei Lynch hammered 11 kills, while seniors Jessica Lauaki and Kiana Tilton had 15 and 13 assists, respectively, for the Knights (13-6), the OIA’s No. 5 seed.
Junior Evalani Toledo and sophomore Shavonne DeMattos each had five kills and two blocks for the Vikings (16-4), while sophomore setter Taylor Alicuben tallied nine assists.

Asia Pacific Junior Cup
Japan extended its lead at the Asia Pacific Junior Cup on Friday at the Waikoloa Beach Resort’s Kings’ Course, winning five of eight foursome matches against Hawaii to take a 9 1/2 to 6 1/2 advantage.
The tournament concludes today with 16 individual matches. The Hawaii team — it includes Waiakea senior Ciera Min, Hawaii Prep senior Andrew Paisley and Waiakea junior Andi Igawa — must win 10 of the matches to claim the cup.
On Friday, Min and Tyler Munetake scored a 2-up win over Nao Honda and Takashi Ogiso, while Igawa and Colby Takushi halved their match with Japan’s Yamato Ebina and Akiho Sato.
Paisley and Hana Furuichi, who notched a 1-up victory over Japan’s Rina Hasegawa and Yoshinari Ishizuku in best ball competion a day earlier, fell to Haruka Morita and Reo Hiruta, 3 and 2.
In other best ball matches on Thursday, Honda and Soma Kitamura beat Min and Munetake 1 up, while Sato and Koki Ishihara defeated Igawa and Bryden Salvador, 4 and 3.

Big Island Babe Ruth has extended its registration period for tee ball, coach pitch, minor league, major league and junior league teams.
Registration will take place from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at Old Kona Airport Park from on Nov. 8, 13 and 15, and at Waikoloa’s Hooko Street Park on Nov. 13 and 16.
