Kona Country Club holds First Tee program this weekend
Kona Country Club will host an open house for the First Tee Program at 2 p.m. Sunday at the driving range. First Tee is a golf program for youth that teaches golf rules and etiquette.
Coaches Kellan Anderson and Milton Alcos will do a golf clinic and have a talk story time with the youth to explain First Tee Hawaii. There will be a meeting for the parents with coach Ken Ziltz.

Annual closure of
amaama season through March
The Department of Land and Natural Resources announced the closing of the season for amaama (striped mullet), effective Saturday through March. This is the regularly scheduled closing of the season.
Violations of the size or season restrictions can result in fines of up to $500 and/or 30 days in jail, plus up to $100 for each fish taken.
Copies of statewide fishing regulations for amaama and all other marine species are available in Honolulu at the DLNR-Aquatics office, 1151 Punchbowl Street, Room 330, and at all neighbor island DLNR-Aquatics offices. Fishing regulations can also be found on the Division of Aquatic Resources’ website at hawaii.gov/dlnr/dar. To report fish catch size or net violations, call 643-3567.
Elks Hoop Shoot
Dec. 8 in Hilo
The annual Elks National Hoop Shoot Free Throw Contest is set to begin, and the local contest will be held at 8:30 a.m. Dec. 8 at Hilo Armory.
The contest is open to boys and girls ages 8 through 13. The free-throw shooting contest boasts the largest noncommercial, co-educational sports program in America, with more than 3 million participants each year.
Participants advance through local, district, state, regional and national levels. One boy and one girl in each of the three age categories (8-9, 10-11, 12-13) wins a national title at the finals in Springfield, Mass. The top six national finalists’ names are inscribed in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

Puu Anahulu Wahine Golf Tourney Dec. 15
Big Island Country Club will host the Puu Anahulu Wahine Golf Tournament on Dec. 15.
The event is a two-person team, modified women’s scramble using the latest November handicap. Registration is at 7 a.m. with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. The entry fee is $100 per person and includes green fees, cart, prizes and awards luncheon at the Puu Anahulu Community Center immediately following the tournament.
Registration forms are available at the Big Island Country Club, located on State Highway 190 at the 20-mile marker or at bigislandcountryclub.com. The entry deadline is Dec. 1. Registrations received by Friday will be entered into a special prize drawing.

Survive the End of the World 10K Dec. 22
Kealakehe High School’s Waverider Triathlon Club will hold its Survive the End of the World 10K at 7 a.m. Dec. 22 at Kahaluu Beach Park. Interested runners may pick up an entry form at Bike Works Kona or sign up at active.com. The cost is $30.

Softball, T-ball
registration Dec. 4
A girls softball registration and clinic will begin Dec. 4 in Kohala.
Registration, for girls ages 9 to 14, will be from 4 to 5 p.m. Dec. 4 and Dec. 6 at Kamehameha Park. Late registration will be Dec. 12. Practice begins the last week of December, and games will be played from early January to early March.
Also, there will be free registration for T-ball on the same dates at Hisaoka Gym for boys and girls ages 5 to 8.
T-ball teams will practice late December and early January and will play games from mid-January to early March.

USA games next year
Alumni Football USA games return to the Big Island early January. These games are an opportunity for alumni of local high schools to play in a full contact football game while raising money for their old high schools.
The games are as follows:
c Kealakehe Alumni vs. Konawaena Alumni, 7 p.m. Jan. 5 at Kealakehe High School.
c Hilo Alumni vs. Waiakea Alumni, 7:30 p.m. Jan. 4 at Wong Stadium.
c Honokaa Alumni vs. Kohala Alumni, 4 p.m. Jan. 6 at Honokaa High School.
c Keaau Alumni vs. Hawaii Prep, TBA.
Only the first 40 players to sign up for each team will get to play. There is no registration fee, but there is a $100 fee to play.

Big Island photographer Kirk Lee Aeder returns as a guest on this week’s Emily T. Gail Show, which is available under “lineup” at espnhawaii.com and as an iTunes podcast.
Aeder, whose photos have appeared in many magazines, will discuss his book “Child of the Storm: How an Angry Young Man Formed a Bond with the Sea and Changed Our Lives Forever.” The book is a memoir of Aeder’s classmate and life-long friend Chris O’Rourke, who in 1975 at the age of 16 became the highest-ranking competitive surfer in the mainland United States at a time when professional surfing was just beginning to gain momentum. O’Rourke died from cancer in 1981 at the age of 22.
Aeder will also discuss the ninth annual Kona Surf Film Festival, organized by Chad Campbell at the Mauna Lani Resort. The event will be held from 4 to 10 p.m. Dec. 7-8. Aeder will be doing a book signing and some talk story during the Film Festival which will also include acoustic music, art, and some special guests.
Gail also will share information on the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association Tournament of Champions to be held in December on Maui. She will give details on opportunities for participating in a fundraising event with Michelle Wie, David Marr and Golf Channel commentator Mark Rolfing.

HI-PAL Winter Basketball Classic Dec. 26-29
Youth basketball teams from throughout the state will gather Dec. 26-29 in Hilo to compete in the 32nd annual HI-PAL Winter Basketball Classic.
The tournament, sponsored by the Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation and the Hawaii Isle Police Activities League, is open to boys and girls ages 5 to 14 years old.
Teams must register by Dec. 14. The registration fee is $80 per team for the older divisions, $60 for the 8-and-under division.
Last year’s tournament drew more than 500 keiki athletes from 52 different teams.
