Hawaii Island projects getting funding include: $1.6 million for Kohala High School to design a science, technology, engineering and math building $600,000 for Kona International Airport for reroofing of terminal buildings to prevent reoccurring leaks
$1.2 million in state funds, matched with $8.9 million in federal funds, for Hawaii Belt Road for safety improvements near Laupahoehoe and Kaawalii gulches to improve roadway drainage
$130,000 for Kohala Mountain Road for road drainage improvements to install larger culverts to increase drainage capacity with headwalls constructed farther from the edge of the road
$100,000 for Volcano Road near Kulani Road for installation of left-turn lanes, improvements and adjustments to the drainage system, streetlights and guardrails to current standards
$650,000 for Honokohau Small Boat Harbor Improvements to create paved parking areas and roadways on the north side of the harbor, as well as water system and drainage improvements
$20,000 for an environmental site assessment, which must be completed before the state returns the Bond Memorial Public Library site to the Department of Land and Natural Resources; the library is no longer in operation since the opening of the new North Kohala Public Library
The governor also released funds for a number of statewide projects, including $200,000 for an Intelligent Transportation System, which comes with $800,000 in federal funds, to develop an approved, regional architecture for the Kauai, Maui and Hawaii highway districts, $2 million to design, build, equip and buy artwork for four special education portable classrooms for the Pookela Special Day Program and $7.1 million to fund Department of Accounting and General Services Public Works Division staff positions for the next fiscal year.
The state will also spend $500,000 to update the state water projects plan, including a related study of North Kona.
