Waimea Elementary School grades 3 through 5 will be taking the Hawaii State Assessments in reading and math from Monday through March 14.

Lilikoi recipes
sought for cookbook
The Center for Spiritual Living of East Hawaii and Rainbow Friends Animal Sanctuary is giving the public the opportunity to share its love of lilikoi (passionfruit) with the world in their Lilikoi Cookbook and Festival.
The first Lilikoi Festival will be held Nov. 2 at the Hawaiian Paradise Park Activity Center in Keaau, and is a fundraiser for the above mentioned organizations. There will be a cooking contest, celebrity chef demonstrations, vendors, educational talks, entertainment and sales of the cookbook featuring residents’ recipes.
Lilikoi recipes may be submitted to lilikoifestival.com or by sending a self-addressed, stamped envelope for the submission form to: HC3, Box 13104, Keaau, HI 96749. For more information, call 966-7372. The deadline for submissions to the cookbook is March 15.
Free healing
workshop is Sunday
The Dragonfly Ranch: Healing Arts Center in Honaunau hosts the healing duo of Yumi and Gen Morita in an open clinic Sunday beginning at 1 p.m. Having recently moved here from Japan, the Moritas have routinely offered monthly Harmonics Healing introductory workshops at the center, followed by one-on-one consultations in an open clinic style.
The free workshop consists of a presentation along with demonstrations and practices for participants. Knowledge is shared of basic anatomy, physiology and immunology, including where organs are and what they do according to Eastern medicine interpretation. A Japanese method called Soto therapy that uses specific heat applications on organs will be taught. Sotai exercise, how to move the body in gentle, comfortable positions for balancing physical alignment, will also be shared.
Anyone wishing to attend is asked to come a few minutes before 1 p.m. to the Dragonfly Ranch. The healing center is located at 84-5146 Keala O Keawe Road, just above the historic Puuhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park, 11⁄2 miles down from the Honaunau Post Office

Meditation class offered in Volcano
The public is invited to come and experience the teachings of Buddha and practice meditation from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday at the Volcano Art Center Niaulani Campus. Niaulani Campus is one block from the post office in Volcano Village. The discourse topic will be “The Causes of Suffering, the second of the Four Noble Truths.”
The class is free, and everyone is welcome, including beginning and experienced meditators. Those attending are asked to dress warmly and bring a cushion.

Mardi Gras coming
to Kealakekua Tuesday
Christ Church Episcopal in Kealakekua will be having Mardi Gras on Fat Tuesday at 6 p.m. at its Queen Emma Community Center. A costume parade, line dancing, Dixieland jazz, food, games, a pinata and prizes for the kids are planned. Admission is $10 per person or $25 for a family of four.
