The University of Hawaii at Hilo’s Dalen Yamauchi is still the best among the local golfers after the second round of the John Burns Intercollegiate tournament Thursday at the Turtle Bay Resort on Oahu.
He shot a 75 and is tied for ninth with five other players at 3 over 147.
No other UH-Hilo, Hawaii or golfer with a local tie is in the top 20.
California’s Joel Stalter had a 2-under 70 and holds a two-stroke lead with a 137 total.
The Vulcans (296-301—597 total) are in eighth place at 21 over, ahead of host Hawaii by six shots.
Hawaii’s Nainoa Calip, a Kamehameha-Hawaii graduate, rebounded with a 2-over 74 after an opening-round 83. He sits at 13 over with a 157 total.
UH-Hilo’s James Horton (84-86) is in last with a 26-over 170 total.
Cal (566) holds a 16-shot lead over BYU in the team standings.
Vulcan softball team cruises
The UH-Hilo softball team defeated Missouri West State 9-1 Thursday at Waimea.
Rebecca Lee went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, while Kristina Victa, Collen Aubrey, Asha Prithviraj had two hits each for the Vulcans (10-7).
Vanessa Salinas pitched a five-inning complete game for the win. She allowed an unearned run on three hits and no walks. She struck out seven.
Janie Smith took the loss. She gave up seven runs in three innings.
