Gov. Neil Abercrombie Friday announced the release of more than $26.2 million for capital improvement projects for schools, including $1.5 million for West Hawaii Explorations Academy to build a new campus.
“These priority CIPs will help address the many needed repair, maintenance and upgrade projects that have accumulated at our public schools over many years,” Abercrombie said. “The majority of these funds will go toward statewide projects and programs aimed at providing the suitable, learning-friendly environment for students and teachers that they each deserve.”
The released funds include:
- $5 million for science facility upgrades at some high schools statewide with Hawaii Island’s zones of school innovation campuses getting highest priority.
- $5 million to relocate or construct temporary facilities statewide, including Waikoloa Elementary and Middle School.
- $2 million for design and construction of softball field improvements at several schools, including Kealakehe and Waiakea High Schools as well as Ka‘u High and Pahala Elementary School.
