Case vs. three PSU officials moves ahead
HARRISBURG, Pa. — Three former Penn State administrators accused of covering up complaints about Jerry Sandusky lost a set of rulings Tuesday, allowing their criminal cases to move forward.
Judge Barry Feudale denied an attempt to throw out the grand jury report backing up the accusations and ruled against two other defense requests. As the judge who oversaw the grand jury, Feudale said he no longer has jurisdiction.
Feudale said he would not have granted the defendants’ request that the charges be thrown out and emphasized that the case was out of his hands once the grand jury issued its report. But the judge did provide an analysis of the defense arguments that, he said, let him to conclude their motions lacked merit.
Jeter runs for first time since setback
CLEVELAND — Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter ran on a field for the first time in several weeks, his biggest steps yet in his comeback from injury.
Manager Joe Girardi said Jeter did some sprints, took grounders and hit indoors at the team’s training complex in Tampa, Fla.
Girardi has been watching videotapes of Jeter’s workouts and said the perennial All-Star “looked as good as at any point that I had seen him in spring training.”
U.S. women beat Netherlands 3-1
THE HAGUE, Netherlands — Christen Press scored twice as the United States women’s team beat the Netherlands 3-1 in a friendly Tuesday to finish its two-match tour of Europe on a winning note.
U.S. coach Tom Sermanni kept his most experienced stars on the bench, but his team had plenty of players ready to step in.
Tobin Heath and Press scored before the break for the Olympic champions, and Press added a third on the hour to bring her international tally to six goals in only seven matches.
Pablo Andujar
loses in Morocco
CASABLANCA, Morocco — Two-time defending champion Pablo Andujar was ousted from the Grand Prix Hassan II on Tuesday, losing 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 in the first round to qualifier Pablo Carreno-Busta in a match between Spaniards.
Carreno-Busta, ranked 237 places below his opponent, will next play second-seeded Kevin Anderson of South Africa.
Tobias Kamke of Germany beat fifth-seeded Jurgen Melzer of Austria 6-3, 6-3, and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez downed sixth-seeded Daniel Gimeno-Traver 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-3 in an all-Spanish match.
Kamke will play former top-five player Tommy Robredo of Spain. Garcia-Lopez faces France’s Edouard Roger-Vasselin, who rallied past Albert Montanes of Spain 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Verdasco tops Johnson at Clay Court
HOUSTON — Sixth-seeded Fernando Verdasco of Spain got a 7-6 (5), 6-2 victory over Steve Johnson of the United States in the U.S. Men’s Clay Court championships on Tuesday.
Fifth-seeded John Isner beat Ryan Harrison of the United States 7-6 (4) 6-4 later in the day Tuesday.
Qualifier Robby Ginepri of the United States kept eighth-seeded Michael Russell of the United States off balance most of the match for a 6-2, 6-2 first-round victory.
