Medeiros granted Goodwill Award
Army Spc. Kareen Kaaumoana Medeiros of Kealakekua was recently awarded the Goodwill Award by People To People International at an awards ceremony in Pyeontaek, South Korea. Medeiros was honored for her contributions in fostering friendships and promoting a greater understanding between U.S. Army soldiers and the people of South Korea through a variety of cultural, educational and humanitarian activities.
PTPI was founded by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956 to foster peace through understanding and focus on promoting love and peace on a global and national level.
Medeiros is stationed with the 2nd Infantry Division at Camp Humphreys in Pyeontaek, South Korea and serves as the president and area III coordinator for the Army’s Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers program.
Medeiros is responsible for the quality of life for more than 8,000 soldiers at Camp Humphreys. She also governs two executive councils and more than 300 general council unit representatives, and has coordinated more than 300 humanitarian programs for the military, the Korean community and international organizations.
Respicio graduates from basic training
Army National Guard Pvt. Kilika M. Respicio has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.
During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values and physical fitness. He received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches and field training exercises.
Respicio is the son of Jenea Respicio of Hilo.
He is a 2011 graduate of Keaau High School.
