IRS’ tax-exempt organization deadline approaching
Wednesday is the deadline for many tax-exempt organizations to file annual reports with the Internal Revenue Service. The Pension Protection Act of 2006 mandates that most tax-exempt organizations file annual Form 990-series information returns or notices with the IRS. Organizations will have their federal tax exemptions revoked if they do not file reports for three consecutive years. The law also imposed a new annual filing requirement on small organizations; churches and church-related organizations are not required to file annual reports.
Form 990-series information returns and notices are due on the 15th day of the fifth month after an organization’s fiscal year ends. Organizations that need additional time to file may obtain an extension. Many organizations use the calendar year as their fiscal year, which makes May 15 the deadline for them.
Small tax-exempt organizations with average annual receipts of $50,000 or less may file an electronic notice called a Form 990-N (e-Postcard), which asks organizations for basic information. Tax-exempt organizations with average annual receipts above $50,000 must file a Form 990 or 990-EZ, depending on their receipts and assets. Private foundations file a Form 990-PF.
The IRS publishes the names of organizations identified as having automatically lost their tax-exempt status for failing to file annual reports. Organizations may reinstate that status by filing an application and paying the appropriate user fee.
The IRS offers an online search tool, Exempt Organizations Select Check, to help users find information about the federal tax status and filings of certain tax-exempt organizations, including whether organizations have had their exemptions revoked.
Cancer support group meeting Thursday
All-cancer support group You’ll Never Walk Alone meets from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Thursday. Cancer survivors and co-survivors are invited to attend the group’s free meetings held the first and third Thursdays of the month. Light refreshments are served.

mayor, Cabinet
slated Thursday
Mayor Billy Kenoi and Cabinet members will hold an informational talk story about the proposed county budget for 2013-14, real property tax rates and benefits for West Hawaii. Hosted by County Council Vice Chairwoman Karen Eoff, District 8, and Dru Mamo Kanuha, District 7, the public meeting is slated from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the County Council Chambers in Building A at the West Hawaii Civic Center.

Line dance lessons begin Thursday
Series of beginner and intermediate line dancing classes begin Thursday at the Kona United Methodist Church on Palani Road. Beginners meet from 6 to 7 p.m.; more experienced dancers meet from 7 to 8 p.m. Classes meet eight consecutive Thursdays, ending July 4.
The cost is $35 per series; $49 for both hours. The single class drop-in fee is $7; $9 for both hours. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes — no brand-new athletic shoes. All ages are welcome; children younger than 12 attend free of charge.

Elks celebrating
Armed Forces Day
The Kona Elks will be celebrating Armed Forces Day starting at 5 p.m. Saturday. A 6:30 p.m. dinner will cost $10 and active and inactive military may attend this adult-only event with spouses or guests. Dinner reservations will be accepted through noon Friday; call the lodge at 329-2616.

Mortgate update planned at meeting
Sandy Choi of Mann Mortgage will have a five-minute presentation about Mann Mortgage and the current state of the mortgage industry during the Kona Krew chapter of Business Network International meeting from 7:45 to 9:15 a.m. Wednesday at Island Naturals on Kaiwi Street in Kailua-Kona.
