Kahaluu Beach cleanup a success
The Kohala Center and staff of the ReefTeach at Kahaluu beach would like to extend their warmest mahalo to those who came to help out with our beach cleanup May 22. We will be planning another cleanup at the end of summer. We collected a lot of trash and cigarette butts that now will not go into the ocean and harm our marine creatures.

Open access for Honokaa residents
After becoming a full time resident of Honokaa, public sentiments about the right for beach access in the area for fishing and gathering purposes is loud. I feel for these great Honokaa people and definitely feel there should be access to the beach for fishing and gathering purposes.
Fishing is a great recreational sport that is good for the mind, spirit, soul and body. In addition to that, it can put food on the table. I don’t have anything against pastures for they also put food on the table. The public of Honokaa definitely wants a town hall meeting for beach access purposes and it should come sooner rather than later.
I am all for beach access for the people of Honokaa for they used to have the privilege to go down to the beach to fish and gather opihi during the sugar plantation days. I don’t see why they should be prohibited from doing this wonderful recreational sport. Perhaps, pasture owners could post security at gates and charge a nominal fee of $2 to $3 per person for the right to get to the beaches to offset the wages of gate watchers.
