Relay for Life is a festive overnight event held nationwide that is designed to celebrate survivorship, pay tribute to those who died of cancer, and raise money for research and programs in the community.
The first Relay for Life was held in Washington state in 1985, when Dr. Gordon Glatt, a board member of the American Cancer Society Tacoma chapter, pledged to run for 24 hours to raise money for the community-based voluntary health organization.
Kona’s annual Relay for Life, which began Saturday evening and ends this morning, had 38 teams and over 460 registered participants. According to the American Cancer Society Website, nearly $90,000 was raised as of press time Saturday. — WHT
