The participants of Team Mango Racing’s annual Trashcan Triathlon collected 845 pieces of trash from Alii Drive last Sunday.
Wendy Minor cleaned her way to the top, collecting 111 pieces of trash during her swim, bike and run. After the time deductions, Minor finished first in a total time of minus-1 hour, 22 minutes, 22 seconds. Lori Montgomery finished in second, collecting 98 pieces of trash for a finishing time of minus-1:15:22. Cathy Nuebauer gathered 84 pieces of trash to claim third place at minus-32:08.
Jim Moore was first for the men and fourth overall, collecting 110 pieces of trash to finish with a time of minus-29:34. Kevin Prater placed second for the men at minus-28:17 after collecting 110 pieces of trash. Sean Morrison finished third for the men with a total time of 7:34 after collecting 64 pieces of trash.
The team of Melissa and Jason Braswell finished first for the relay teams with a total time of 40:42 after collecting 27 pieces of trash. Second place for the relays went to Dave Pratt and Vicki Brasher, who collected 18 pieces of trash and finished with a time of 49:42. Luka Wohl and Tim Wiley rounded out the top three with a time of 51:20 and a trash count of 20.

Also on Sunday, the Tinman Triathlon took place at Oahu’s Kapiolani Park. A handful of Kona athletes went over to compete in the fun race. In the race, the athletes swam 750 yards, biked 38 kilometers from Kapiolani Park to Hawaii Kai and back, and finished with a 10-kilometer run around Diamond Head to finish at Kapiolani Park.
Six members of the Waverider Triathlon Club raced with everything they had against the Oahu competition. The boys dominated the podium in the 15-19 age group, taking the top four places.
Dan Gampon earned 28th place overall and first for his age group with a time of 2:05:55.1. Teammate Christopher Prater was just three-tenths of a second behind to claim second at 2:05:55.4. CJ Agusen and Keoni Smith raced to the finish line together with only one-tenth of a second separating them. Agusen placed third at 2:11:44.7, and Smith was fourth at 2:11:44.8.
The girls also gave a good showing in the 15-19 age group. Cedes DeCarli placed 188th overall and first in her age group with a time of 2:32:42.4, and Somer Mitchell took fourth (3:12:43.0).
Michael DeCarli, Arturo Morales, Nathan Grocholski and Chris Morrison also competed. Michael DeCarli finished eighth overall and second in his age group with a time of 2:00:04.2. Morales, a teacher at Kealakehe, finished 13th overall with a time of 2:01:53.6. Grocholski placed 72nd (2:17:07.4), and Morrison was 333rd (2:50:37.7).

On Saturday, the MS Charity Ride, a benefit for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, begins in Waikoloa, with cyclists biking to Hawi and back for a total of 65 miles. On Sunday, they will start in Waikoloa and make their way to Kona Commons, where they will turn around and cycle back for a total of 50 miles.

Also on Sunday, Frozen Pea Productions will host the Pedal Till Ya Puke (6.5 miles), Run Till Ya Ralph (6.5 miles), Papa Pea Pedal or Plod (3.5 miles) and the Mad Dog Mile (one mile) at 8:03 a.m. Hawaiian time. These races are open to road and mountain bikes, runners, walkers and joggers. The races will begin at designated areas on Kaloko Drive, depending on the distance, with the finish line located at the top of the road. All distances deal with fun, challenging elevation gains and road grades.
