Police searching for Puna woman wanted on a warrant
Big Island police are searching for a 40-year-old Puna woman wanted in connection with a reported burglary and domestic incident Aug. 16 in Kurtistown.
Mary Lolita Santos of Mountain View is also wanted on a $5,000 bench warrant for a felony theft case, according to the Hawaii Police Department.
She is described as 5 feet 2 inches tall, weighing 147 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes.
Anyone who knows her whereabouts should call the Police Department’s nonemergency line at 935-3311 or Officer Edwin Namohala at 961-2373.
Those who prefer to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
Missing teen located
Big Island police have located 17-year-old Mailekaleialoha Boe of Hilo who was reported missing.
She was found Aug. 16 in Hilo, unharmed, according to the Hawaii Police Department.
Man mistakenly released from jail enters plea
An 18-year-old Pahoa man mistakenly released from jail March 6 while awaiting trial for robbery pleaded not guilty Monday to a bail jumping charge.
Hilo Circuit Court Judge Glenn Hara ordered Tyler Kamanao Taylor to appear for trial Dec. 16 at 8:30 a.m.
According to a police log, Taylor turned himself in and was arrested Sunday afternoon at a home on Hapuu Street in Leilani Estates near Pahoa.
Police had been looking for Taylor since Department of Public Safety officials released him from Hawaii Community Correctional Center after receiving notification from Hilo District Court that his case, which included robbery, theft, auto theft, terroristic threatening, unlawful imprisonment and criminal property damage, had been dismissed. The reason for the dismissal by the district court was that Taylor had been indicted on those charges and they were transferred to Hilo Circuit Court, where that same day he had pleaded not guilty.
Taylor originally was to face trial on those charges July 8 but didn’t show up. A warrant was issued for his arrest.
On Monday, Hilo Circuit Court Greg Nakamura rescheduled Taylor’s robbery trial for Oct. 21 at 9 a.m.
Man pleads not guilty in Puna domestic incident
Police seized a 30-30 caliber rifle and a 9-mm pistol from a 45-year-old Pahoa man accused of illegally discharging a firearm in a residential neighborhood, according to court documents.
Peter Lopes Jr. made his initial appearance Monday afternoon in Hilo District Court. Judge Harry Freitas ordered him to return at 2 p.m. Tuesday for a preliminary hearing that Stephens Media Hawaii was unable to find out the result of as of press time. Lopes is charged with first-degree reckless endangering, domestic abuse leaving the scene of an accident and six firearms violations.
The judge maintained $123,000 bail for Lopes, who has four prior felony convictions, according to court records.
The charges stem from an early Wednesday evening domestic incident in Hawaiian Paradise Park. Lopes allegedly punched his girlfriend before fleeing and rear-ending another vehicle. Around 9 p.m., police responded to Hawaiian Paradise Park to a report of gunshots. No injuries were reported.
Lopes was subsequently arrested. His father was also arrested, but released pending investigation.
Green sea turtle
euthanized after injury
LIHUE, Kauai — A green sea turtle found with two broken front flippers on a Kauai beach has been euthanized.
The Garden Island reported the 80-pound animal was found Sunday night in the Pali Ke Kua area.
X-rays determined that monofilament net had cut through scales, muscle and bone.
Sea turtles get all of their locomotion from front flippers. Kauai District Fisheries biologist Don Heacock said the animal was unable to move and there was no way for it to heal.
The carcass will be frozen and sent to the National Marine Fisheries Service in Honolulu for a necropsy.
Heacock said gillnet entanglement is an ongoing problem and that making nets from natural fiber such as cotton or hemp would lessen the amount of “ghost fishing” from lost gear.
Deedy spent most days at Honolulu lawyer’s office
HONOLULU — Christopher Deedy’s defense attorney said that since April, the federal agent’s world revolved around the lawyer’s downtown Honolulu office, where he devoted himself to fighting a murder charge after shooting and killing a man in a Waikiki McDonald’s restaurant.
Now that a mistrial has been declared, Deedy returns home to Arlington, Va., and to his job with the U.S. Department of State. But he’ll have to come back and do it all over again.
Defense attorney Brook Hart said Deedy didn’t stray far from his office while staying in different Honolulu locations. Attorneys are scheduled to meet Friday to discuss scheduling a new trial.
Hart said Deedy and his family won’t be here for that meeting because some of them left Monday night and the others are leaving Tuesday.
Toddler injured in
second-story fall
HONOLULU — Maui police say a 16-month-old boy was injured in a fall from a second-story window.
KITV reported police took a call on the incident Saturday morning from a home in Makawao.
The boy was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition and later flown for treatment to Oahu.
The name of the child was not immediately available.
