Fan falls, dies at 49ers-Packers game in SF
SAN FRANCISCO — A football fan fell to his death from an elevated pedestrian walkway Sunday at Candlestick Park during the 49ers’ final season opener at the San Francisco stadium, police said.
The death came just after kickoff at about 1:30 p.m. in the 49ers’ 34-28 win over Green Bay, police said, and multiple witnesses reported the man appeared to be intoxicated before he fell to a sidewalk.
The death also happened the same day a railing collapsed at the Colts’ game against the Raiders in Indianapolis injuring two fans who were leaning against the barrier above the tunnel leading to Oakland’s locker room. It appeared both fans in Indiana escaped serious injury, stadium officials said.
Texas, USC tumble
out of AP poll
NEW YORK — Texas and Southern California have dropped out of The Associated Press college football poll after ugly losses and Miami jumped in at No. 15 after its biggest victory in a while.
Alabama is still No. 1 after an off week, heading into a much-anticipated rematch with No. 6 Texas A&M on Saturday.
Oregon is No. 2. Clemson moved up a spot to No. 3 and Ohio State slipped one to No. 4. Stanford remains No. 5.
The Longhorns came into the weekend ranked 15th, but a 40-21 loss at BYU in which Texas allowed a school-record 550 yards rushing has Mack Brown’s team unranked.
Southern California was No. 25 before a 10-7 loss at home to Washington State.
Miami is ranked for the first time since November 2010.
US wins Walker Cup
SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. — Nathan Smith won the deciding point in the United States’ 17-9 victory over Britain and Ireland in the Walker Cup on Sunday, beating England’s Nathan Kimsey 4 and 3 in the fifth singles match at historic National Golf Links of America.
The United States, ahead 8-4 entering the final day in the biennial amateur event, split the four morning foursomes matches and won seven of the 10 afternoon singles matches.
The U.S. leads the series 35-8-1. In 2011, Britain and Ireland won 14-12 at Royal Aberdeen in Scotland.
The 35-year-old Smith, a four-time U.S. Mid-Amateur champion from Pittsburgh, won the par-3 13th and par-4 14th with pars and ended the match with a halve for bogey on the par-4 15th.
Alabama teammates Bobby Wyatt and Justin Thomas, 45-year-old Todd White, California’s Michael Kim, Oklahoma State’s Jordan Niebrugge and Stanford’s Patrick Rodgers also won singles matches.
England’s Matthew Fitzpatrick and Callum Shinkwin and Ireland’s Kevin Phelan won their singles matches. Fitzpatrick, a freshman at Northwestern, is the U.S. Amateur champion.
The event, first played in 1922 at National Golf Links, is named in honor of former USGA President George Herbert Walker — President George H.W. Bush’s grandfather and President George W. Bush’s great-grandfather. George W. Bush attended the matches.
Wrestling wins vote for place in 2020 Olympics
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — Wrestling, a sport as ancient as the games themselves, is back in the Olympics after seven months in limbo and even more determined to keep its place for centuries to come.
The International Olympic Committee fixed what it admits was a big mistake Sunday, voting wrestling back onto the program for the 2020 and 2024 Games.
Presenting new leadership and a revamped sport, wrestling easily defeated bids from baseball-softball and squash to regain its Olympic status.
The result capped a frantic six-month campaign by the wrestling body FILA to save its Olympic status after the IOC executive board surprisingly cut it from the list of core sports in February.
Wrestling received 49 votes to win in the first round of the secret balloting by the International Olympic Committee.
Baseball-softball got 24 votes and squash 22.
“Wrestling has shown great passion and resilience in the last few months,” IOC President Jacques Rogge said. “They have taken a number of steps to modernize and improve their sport.”
