The Public Utilities Commission approved Hawaiian Electric Co.’s request to extend discount electric vehicle charging rates for another year. The pilot program, to reduce the cost for charging electric vehicles during off-peak times, began in October 2010, HEI officials said.
To encourage off-peak vehicle charging, optional lower rates are available from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. For neighbor island customers, off-peak charging is 7 to 9 cents per kilowatt hour lower. Charging at other times is possible, but at 3 cents to 5 cents per kilowatt hour above standard rates.
For those with rooftop photovoltaic systems, Hawaiian Electric also promotes combining the discount electric vehicle charging rates with net energy metering.
