HONOLULU — Officials with Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Co. are apologizing for what residents are saying is an excessive amount of ash from sugar cane fields burning.
Hawaii News Now reported Saturday that South Maui residents are complaining about finding black ash covering cars, sidewalks and parking lots.
Residents say they are used to seeing some ash fallout when the company does a burn prior to harvesting. But they say Friday morning’s burn left most surfaces blanketed.
The sugar manufacturer says it was burning a field off Mokulele Highway near Kihei around 4 a.m.
General Manager Rick Volner says windy conditions that are good for harvesting resulted in heavier ash fallout. Volner says the company apologizes for any inconvenience and thanked residents for their patience.
21 dogs left inside parked car in Waikiki
HONOLULU — Police have seized 21 dogs that were left caged inside a parked car in Waikiki.
Hawaii News Now reported Saturday that Honolulu police have initiated an animal cruelty case against the 68-year-old mother of a dog breeder.
Kat Linker says she was out for a walk Thursday night at Ala Wai Boat Harbor when she spotted the animals inside a Honda Fit.
Linker, of Waikiki, says all the windows were up and some dogs were running around in the car.
Authorities have not cited the driver, who had taken the dogs without permission.
A veterinarian with the Hawaiian Humane Society says all the canines are in good condition.
Authorities say because of a law prohibiting more than 10 dogs per household, the animals will be split up.
