Entries sought for Charity Trees event
Mauna Lani Bay Hotel & Bungalows invites area organizations and charities to participate in the 20th annual Charity Trees at Mauna Lani this holiday season. This event helps to raise awareness and funds for local nonprofit organizations.
Each decorated tree will be displayed in Mauna Lani Bay’s hotel lobby through the holiday season. Community members, resort guests, employees and friends are invited to view the entries and vote for their favorite tree with a $1 donation per vote.
The Charity Trees will be on display from Dec. 6 and winners will be announced Dec. 19. Mauna Lani Bay will award cash prizes to the organizations whose trees receive the highest number of votes: $2,000 for first place, $1,000 for second place and $500 for third place. Donations will be split among all participating organizations, excluding first, second and third place winners. All for-profit organizations must designate a charity to receive their donation.
Entry forms will be accepted through Nov. 25. For entry forms, visit maunalani.com or contact Ranie Fukumoto at 881-7002 or rfukumoto@maunalani.com.

HarvesTea raises
funds for rescue tubes
Island residents are invited to attend HarvesTea, scheduled for Nov. 16 at the Anna Ranch Heritage Center in Waimea. In addition to enjoying tea and crumpets, the main focus of HarvesTea is to bring attention to the need for water rescue tubes, and their sponsorship and installation on every beach on the Big Island. Originally funded through the Alex and Duke DeRego Foundation, HarvesTea is an extension of the effort on behalf of founder, Shirley DeRego. The public is now being invited to join the vision of “Saving Lives One Tube At A Time!” while completing the goal of installing 75 additional tubes.
HarvesTea begins at 10:30 a.m. and includes a full tea-style meal, including petite sandwiches and quiche, green salad, fruit, scones, desserts, as well as hot and cold tea. International author and Waimea resident Darian Gee will share on the value of friendship and community as it wraps around her novel, “Friendship Bread.” DeRego will share why and how the foundation was created, the focus on supporting the Junior Lifeguard Program, as well as the call to provide rescue tubes for island beaches.
Sponsorship of a rescue tube is needed. An individual, corporation or group can sponsor a tube with a tax deductible donation of $100, which includes tube and installation hardware.
Tickets are $20 per person, with all proceeds benefiting the Alex and Duke DeRego Foundation. Seating is limited. To make a reservation, contact Darlene Pullen at 220-7584 or pullendarlene@gmail.com. All reservations and payment must be received by Monday. HarvesTea is sponsored by the Women’s Ministry of New Hope Waimea Christian Fellowship.
