Wilder joins WHDTA staff, offers workshop
Eva Wilder has joined the teaching staff of West Hawaii Dance Theatre &Academy in Kailua-Kona.
Wilder, who brings her passion for movement and the connection between mind and body, into her teaching, continues to dance professionally, having just returned from international tours with Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre and Los Samurai Perdidos. She recently moved to Kona from San Francisco.
Her background and career as a professional dancer led her to the Pilates method to rehabilitate from an injury. Impressed by the intelligence, strength, and health inherent in the system, she completed her full certification with Pilates Sports Center. Her path led her to the Gyrotonic Expansion System, which widened her perspective and deepened her understanding of body, mind, and spirit. In complement to these movement modalities, she is a craniosacral thrapist educated at the Upledger Institute.
She also has experience working with a wide range of injuries, abilities and ages, from rehabilitation to sport-specific conditioning.
Wilder will be conducting a six-week contemporary dance workshop at the academy off of Alapa Street, in the Old Industrial Area.
The workshop will be held on Tuesdays Sept. 1 through Oct. 6. Cost is $75. Call 329-8876 or visit www.whdt.org to register. Classes for keiki ages 7 to 12 will be held from 4 to 5:30 p.m. while classes for teens and adults with be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
Through improvisation, technical exercises, and longer movement phrases, participants will learn about their anatomy and biomechanics and physics. During the workshop, they will also practice moving in and out of the floor with efficiency, fluidity, and softness and explore verticality and horizontality. Long pants and sleeves that cover your shoulders are recommended.
West Hawaii Dance Theatre &Academy is a nonprofit educational organization sponsored by the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, Hawaii Community Foundation, Atherton Family, Vance Wall Foundation and local businesses and families.
