HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii Attorney General Doug Chin says a federal appeals court is allowing the state to resume transferring Maui County public hospital operations to Kaiser.
Chin said in a statement Friday the state won’t unilaterally change the status of United Public Workers members. He says the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling allows other transition work to continue.
A 2015 law allows the state public hospital system to transfer Maui County operations to a private operator. The state is transferring operations at Maui Memorial Medical Center, Kula Hospital and Lanai Community Hospital to Kaiser.
The United Public Workers sued to stop the transition from taking place.
The ruling comes two days after the state and the union told the court they were having productive discussions to resolve the lawsuit.
