Area students graduate
Josiah Adams, of Kapaau, graduated from the University of San Diego on May 26. He earned a bachelor’s degree in communication studies, participated in the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) at USD and was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant ensign in the U.S. Marine Corps on May 24 and will report to The Basic School at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia.
Kauanoe Petrill-Abrojina, of Ocean View, also graduated from the University of San Diego on May 26, and earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology.
Abe Binder, of Waimea, graduated from Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colo., with a Bachelor of Science in computer science. Binder is a graduate of Hawaii Preparatory Academy.
Randall Berdon, of Kealakekua, graduated from the Univeristy of Iowa, earning an MS in mechanical engineering.
Kealakehe High awards Sarah Rosenberg scholarships
The Kealaheke High School Community Council has announced its 2018-19 awardees for the Sarah Rosenberg Memorial Foundation Scholarship. The awardees for each category are: “Most Outstanding (Kupono) Waverider” – First place winner: Olivia Loney ($3,000); Second place winner: Makana Ioh ($2,500) and “Most Charitable (Lokomaika’i) Waverider” – First place winner: Alexus Agard ($3,000); Second place winner: Juliana Hennig ($2,500). Based on placing first in their category, both Olivia and Alexus delivered the main student speeches for the class of 2019 at Kealakehe High School’s graduation.
As far as their future plans go, Olivia Loney will study the Korean language while attending EF language school in South Korea. She will then pursue a degree in international affairs (focus on east Asia) at George Washington University. Makana Ioh will attend the University of Manoa as a Chancellor’s scholar and will major in molecular cell biology. Alexus Agard is planning to attend De Anza University in California and will study mathematics while Julianna Hennig is pursuing a double major in politics and gender studies from Mount Holyoke in Massachusetts.
