such a gem?
At the Waimea dump on Tuesday, I had the pleasure and surprise of experiencing that old saying, “what’s one man’s junk is another man’s treasure.”
As a lifelong connoisseur and collector of Tiffany-style lamps and shades, you can imagine my surprise as I tossed my trash bag into the bin and spotted that unique style of lamp in an open box at the top of the dump bin. It was just begging to be saved and added to my collection. It was an arm’s length easy rescue and I didn’t get a bit dirty.
Who would dump such a gem? You know who you are. You should be ashamed of filling our landfill when you could have so easily taken it to our dump store reuse center, or as it is affectionately known by us locals as The Dumptique. You have to pass that thrift center as you drive out of the transfer station on your right. The money made off of the donated items sold supports the recycling center, which saves tons of glass, cans, paper and cardboard from the landfill. This thrift store is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
Thinking that I was only rescuing a beautiful lamp shade, for surely no intelligent person would throw away a working lamp, you can imagine my surprise and delight when I got home and discovered that the lamp only needed a common light bulb replacement. Next time don’t be so lazy and take a few extra steps and donate your usable items to the thrift shop and let your light shine. Our planet will appreciate your effort.

To the staff of the Kona Community Aquatics Center, I would like to say thank you again for keeping the pool a safe place to swim. Taking precautions concerning the uptick of the new variant is much appreciated.
