Volcano Watch: Large earthquake a reminder to ‘Drop, Cover, and Hold On’
The magnitude-6.2 earthquake that occurred at 11:49 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 10, originated just south of the Big Island. The large earthquake, caused by bending of the oceanic plate, serves as a stark reminder that the State of Hawaii is no stranger to potentially damaging earthquakes.
Mango and papaya thrive in the heat
We usually think of lush tropical gardens when Hawaii comes to mind, but much of our land especially on the leeward side is desert. There are many delectable fruits that actually do best where conditions are hot and dry. Figs, pomegranates, papaya and dates are just a few that come to mind, but mangoes are by far the most popular.
