My Turn: The outrage is justified

Allow me to enlighten Robert Hastings about the “hoopla” over the overturning of Roe v. Wade referenced in his My Turn column published Sunday, July 3. I do not think the loss of rights to any American is exaggerated. Though I am glad I live in Hawaii, I am also an American and sympathize with women across the country who have to deal with this.

I am outraged over the fact that a twice-impeached president who did not win the popular vote, and a powerful Senate leader were able to seat the justices needed for this regressive majority on the Supreme Court.

I am outraged that an already seated justice, who was confirmed after a contentious hearing accusing him of sexual harassment, married to a conservative activist tied to the insurrection, has the ability to be part of this and any decision that affects so many.

I am outraged that a 10-year-old girl in Ohio who was raped by her father was denied an abortion because she was six weeks and three days pregnant in a state that outlawed the procedure after six weeks. I am outraged that the Republican response is that she should look at it as an opportunity.

I am outraged that there is evidence that this is only the beginning of the intent to erode other rights that do not align with their values, such as same-sex marriage.

I am outraged that the intent is to make abortion a nationwide ban, if Republicans gain control.

I am outraged that they want to force their religious belief that life begins with conception on those of us who do not believe that.

I am outraged that even contraception is at risk, and in-vitro fertilization.

This is not an exaggeration. There is plenty of evidence that these and many other regressive actions are their intentions. I could go on and on. Mr. Hastings seems like a reasonable man; women need allies to understand what’s at stake.

I urge him and others to look deeper and understand that the “hoopla” — the outrage — is justified.
