Sunday drivers
are the best
I walk about 2 miles on Mamalahoa Highway every Sunday and have been impressed with how thoughtful and careful almost every driver is, as they pass me and my little dog. People will move over to give us room, there not being any real area designated for walkers. Sometimes, if two cars are coming toward each other, one will stop, to make sure we all have enough space. I am continually grateful for the kindness and consideration of these Sunday drivers.
Today, a passing motorist went out of his way to see to our safety. As we were homeward bound, four dogs came out of a driveway, barking loudly and acting very aggressive. This kind man not only pulled his burgundy SUV over to the side of the road, he got out of the car and walked to get between us and the dogs, allowing us to get past what looked like a very scary and threatening situation.
Mahalo to all the drivers who pass us every weekend and a special thank you to today’s angel who possibly saved us from great harm.

Who are we to believe?
Dear Mr. Gregory: It seems you ran directly into the tip of the “pet” industry’s speargun here on the Big Island. I agree with you. And I’d say we actually represent the sentiments of the majority of residents, too.
From my own independent study of this issue over many years, I have concluded like you, that “facts,” “statistics,” “modeling,” and even “science,” can be used and misused to provide cover for various political agendas; most vehemently when those agendas support a multi-million dollar industry that has been licensed by the state to exploit by unrestricted “taking” (some would say, “stripping”) of natural resources; belonging to everyone, or no one, depending on your value system!
All these yellow tang that Mr. Walsh has said can certainly be found in his papers, I have not seen as before in the places I have known for years. So, who are we to believe, Mr. Walsh’s numbers or our own lying eyes?
To this end, what we have is a “modern” value system imposed by commercial interests that, as the saying goes, “knows the price of everything but the value of nothing!”
