WHEA receives grant
for mainland trip
West Hawaii Explorations Academy eighth graders recently received a grant for $1,000 from the Windermere Foundation to use toward their class trip to the East Coast planned for the end of the school year.
The students are traveling to Redding, Connecticut, to reveal where the story, “My Brother Sam Is Dead” took place. After Redding, they will be going to Boston to see where the Boston Tea Party took place, the Freedom Trail and, maybe, catch a Red Sox game. Then in New York, they are going to see the Statue of Liberty and the 9/11 Memorial. During this trip, they will also meet pen pals from Enfield, Connecticut, and visit Mystic Seaport as well as the campuses of MIT, Harvard and Yale. The school says the trip helps students learn more about the Revolutionary War, science and culture.
The trip will last 10 days and will include about 37 students.

Inaugural Kona Community Fair set
The inaugural Kona Community Fair will be held 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Dec. 22 at Harold H. Higashihara Park in North Kona.
This event is funded by local businesses, sponsorships and volunteers to enable qualified families a free family fun day. If you or your business would like to be a part of the event, contact Evelyn Sasaki, fair coordinator at 313-1316. There are also a limited number of food booths still available for businesses.
The fair will consist of local artist displays and sales, prize giveaways, games, petting zoo, food booths, bouncers, live entertainment and more. There will also be special appearances by Santa and his elves and others.
The event is sponsored by the Widow Foundation, Kona Gospel Church, Richard Sasaki Trust and King’s Daughters Ministry.
