The Wailing Souls coming for one show on the Big Island
Three-time Grammy Award nominees The Wailing Souls will play a concert at the Honokaa Peoples Theatre on May 12.
The Wailing Souls have recorded with Grammy winning reggae legend Toots, five-time Grammy winner Ziggy Marley, Sly &Robbie, Cedella Marley, Grammy winner Burning Spear, legendary British band UB40 and Hasidic rapper Matisyahu.
Doors will open at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $45 for general admission and $65 for gold circle seating.

Volcano Art Center presents a poetry reading with
The Poets of 1958
Laura Mullen, Marthe Reed and Susan M. Schultz, a trio of poets who make up The Poets of 1958, will offer a poetry reading from 7-9 p.m. March 29 at the Volcano Art Center Ni‘aulani Campus in Volcano Village.
Each poet will read selections of their pieces covering a range of topics. The evening will be an opportunity to discuss poetry and hear the poets read their work as they share their stories.
This event is free, although a $5 donation to Volcano Art Center is greatly appreciated.

Tom Peek to host workshop at
Volcano Art Center
Join Big Island author Tom Peek for “Writing for Inner Exploration and Life Reflection” from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Volcano Art Center Ni‘aulani Campus in Volcano Village.
The workshop cost is $75/$65 for VAC Members.
Peek’s workshop is perfect for journal keepers, bloggers, autobiographers, spiritual seekers, memoir and family history writers and anyone who simply enjoys writing. No previous writing experience is necessary.
Peek, an award-winning novelist, has taught his popular Hawaii workshops since 1991, encouraging hundreds of islanders to write their own journals, blogs, family histories, stories, poems, novels and essays.

Kahilu Theatre presents musician Vieux Farka Touré
Vieux Farka Touré, often described as “the Hendrix of the Sahara,” will perform at the Kahilu Theatre at 7 p.m. April 13.
Ticket prices are $68/$48/$25 and can be purchased at kahilutheatre.org, by calling 885-6868 or at the Kahilu Theatre box office.
Vieux Farka Touré is a West African musician and the son of Ali Farka Touré, a Grammy award-winning musician from Mali who passed away in 2006. Vieux studied at the Mali Institut National des Arts, and his debut album was released in 2007.
Vieux’s music combines Malian traditions and new variations of the West African music with American blues. Since his first album, he has released eight more.
Vieux has also chosen to continue his fathers work to eradicate malaria in Mali by donating 10 percent of his proceeds to Modiba’s “Fight Malaria” campaign in Niafunké.

William Twibell
hosting art show
This week, the one-man Art Show of Gyotaku by William Twibell will be at the Gateway Visitor Center from 5-8 p.m. now through June 1.
There will also be an informative talk at that time about whale sharks in Hawaii by the Hawaii Uncharted Research Collective. Light refreshments will be served after the program. It is free and open to the public.
Kona Kampachi, Big Island Abalone, Kona Cold Lobster, SPF shrimp and crabs are a few of the prints displaying colors and details of the specimens. In addition, prints of stripped marlin, spearfish, ono, mu, 120 lb. ulua, parrotfish and many other beautiful Hawaiian fish will be included.
Mr. Twibell is a master nature printer who has exhibited in the Smithsonian Institute and had one-man shows in the Waikiki Aquarium, Che-pasta Restaurant Honolulu and Bank of America in Arcata, California, Carmel and Woodland.
He presently sells his work at the Kailua Village Artists Gallery in Kailua-Kona, the Harbor Gallery, Kawaihai as well as his studio in Kona Palisades. All displayed works are available for purchase.

Krien’s dinner and show returns to Kona
Dance artist and choreographer Myra Krien has returned to Hawaii to share another dinner show experience with Kona.
This year’s production, Ascendance of Athena, features 20+ performers gathering from all the islands and mainland to retell the myths of the goddesses from various cultures through theatrical belly dance. The event takes place from 5-11 p.m. Saturday at the new LeiAloha center across from The Club in Kailua-Kona. Tickets are $50/40 at the door. Dinner will be catered by Amelia of The Strawberry Patch with omnivorous and vegan/gluten-free meal options available at ticket purchase. Six to eight person party tables are available for groups.

WAC show highlights Dahlheimer, Ulrich
The Waimea Arts Council presents the exhibition, “Dual Retrospective” today through April 15 at the Firehouse Front Gallery.
The showcase features the works of late artists Patricia Stevens Dahlheimer and Denise “Rani” Ulrich.
Dahlheimer studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and later worked as an assistant professor at Linfield College in Oregon and worked on her art during an extended stay on the Big Island, where she held previous shows as well.
Ulrich’s colorful work was influenced by Hawaii where she focused on larger-than-life images of both small and large creatures. She earned her theatre arts degrees from Cornell University and attended Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design where she studied oil painting and other methods.
Proceeds from sales benefit local animal welfare and art programs. An opening reception will be from 2-5 p.m. Sunday at the gallery, 67-1201 Mamalahoa Highway in Waimea.
Aloha Theatre
classes resume
Aloha Theatre will resume its roster of classes for all ages beginning April 3.
Artistic director Jerry Tracy’s “Tuesday Troupers” is an 8-week class for eight through 12-year-old children who can read. It begins April 3 and meets from 3:30-5:30 p.m. each Tuesday through May 22. Tuition is $80. The Troupers will focus on performance skills such as projection, articulation and characterization, with some improvisation experimentation also included. Tracy is assisted by Kira Kane, who will teach a short choreography routine to be part of the performance which, will be offered free to the public on the last class day.
On Wednesdays, Jaquelynn Collier will once again lead “The Little Theatre Club” for children between the ages of four and seven. The club will meet from 4:30-5:30 p.m. each Wednesday for six weeks, from April 4 through May 9. Ms. Collier will focus on helping club members increase self confidence and develop basic social and performance skills. Tuition is $60.
Felicity Johnson will continue her popular “Intergenerational Acting” class from 2-4 p.m. Thursdays. This class is open to people of all ages, and will run from April 5 through May 24. Tuition is $80.
All of the above classes will be held at the historic Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu, and each will culminate in a free performance, open to the public, on the final class day. Online registration at alohatheatre.com is recommended
