Work to repair a sinkhole that formed late last year on Alii Drive continues this week in Kailua Village.
Motorists should expect delays as the portion of Alii Drive between Hualalai and Walua roads will be reduced to one lane from 7 a.m. until sunset Monday through Friday as Isemoto Contracting Co. Ltd. crews work to repair the sinkhole, which was caused by erosion to the seawall fronting Oneo Bay.
Road crews may also work on Saturdays to speed up the project, according to the Hawaii County Department of Public Works. However, two lanes of travel will be open during the evening hours.
The work, which began Jan. 27, is anticipated to last about three to four weeks.
Outside the Kailua Village area, the state Department of Transportation plans roadwork in various areas of West Hawaii this week:
• On Mamalahoa Highway (Highway 11), motorists should expect a single-lane closure in the vicinity of mile markers 96 and 101, from Kapakakapa Place to Hookena Beach Road in South Kona for landscaping work. In Ka‘u, a single-lane closure will be in effect from Kaalaala Street Bridge to Kanenelu Bridge for landscaping work and a detour to adjacent temporary bridges will be in effect in the vicinity of Punaluu Beach Park (Ninole Loop Road) as crews work on the Ninole and Hilea stream bridges that are closed for reconstruction.
• On Mamalahoa Highway (Highway 190), a single-lane closure will be in effect between mile markers 20 and 24, between Puulani Drive and the scenic lookout in North Kona, for landscaping work. In South Kohala, single-lane closures will be in effect in the vicinity of mile markers 14 and 16, near the highway’s intersection with Daniel K. Inouye Highway, for landscaping work.
• On Akoni Pule Highway (Highway 270), motorists should expect delays due to a single-lane closure in the vicinity of Halaula-Maulili Road for installation of waterlines.
